Children

Children of all ages are an important part of the Oakwood church family. We provide many opportunities for children to worship, learn and grow at Oakwood. All Oakwood children's workers are carefully selected and have undergone thorough background checks to comply with PA child protection laws and Oakwood policies.

Children in Worship

Children are always welcome at all of Oakwood's worship services! We also provide several alternative options for small children during the worship service.

Nursery

Babies and toddlers up to age 3 are welcome in the nursery. The nursery is located next to the sanctuary.

During both the 8:30 am the 11:15 am services nursery is provided during the sermon. Parents can take their children to the nursery at the beginning of the sermon and are asked to pick them up during the last song at the end of the service.

Nursery is also provided during the Sunday school hour from 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones is a special program for children ages 3 years through 1st grade that is held during the sermon during both the 8:30 am and the 11:15 am worship services on Sunday. Children worship with their families during the first part of the worship service and then are excused for Stepping Stones when the sermon starts. Parents are asked to pick their children up from Stepping Stones during the last song at the end of the service.

Communion

We ask that children not participate in Communion until they are old enough to understand what it means and make a profession of faith in Christ for themselves (1 Corinthians 11:28-29). There is not a formal age limit, but special communicant classes for 7th and 8th graders are offered in alternating years to instruct and prepare children.  If you would like your child to partake of communion and your child is ready to make a profession of faith, please contact Pastor Dan.

Christian Education for Children (Sunday School)

Sunday School

Sunday School classes for children ages 3 years (by September 1) through high school are offered during the school year. Three-year-olds through 12th grade meet in their classrooms at 10:00 am.

The nursery is open and staffed for children birth through age 3 (on or after September 1).

We use the Great Commission Show Me Jesus curriculum for all classes through 8th grade. High School age studies vary and may include studying a specific book of the Bible, a Christian book, and/or joining the adult Sunday school for short-term studies.

Please note that Sunday school is not held on Thanksgiving Sunday, the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's and Easter Sunday.
